Retiring in the UAE: How Expats Are Choosing to Spend Their Golden Years

When you think of retirement, you might picture quiet beaches, warm sunshine, and a life of comfort. For many expats, the UAE is becoming that dream destination—and not just for a quick visit, but as a place to truly call home after hanging up their work boots.

As more people choose to stay in the UAE after retiring, interesting lifestyle trends are starting to emerge—and it’s not just about relaxing by the beach (although, yes, there’s plenty of that too! ).

Where Are Retirees Living?

Some retirees are trading the hustle and bustle of Dubai for quieter, more affordable emirates like Ras Al Khaimah or Sharjah, where life moves a bit slower and everyday expenses are easier to manage. Others are embracing a transnational lifestyle—splitting their time between their home countries and the UAE to enjoy the best of both worlds .

According to Dr. İdil Akıncı, a social policy expert and researcher, there are two key trends among retirees:

  • Sponsorship by adult children working in the UAE, allowing parents to stay longer
  • Long-term residency options like the Golden Visa, which open up the possibility of a stable, extended life in the UAE

She also notes that many families are choosing internal relocation to more budget-friendly emirates to help stretch their savings and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle.

Real Estate: More Than Just a Roof Over Your Head

Retirees aren’t just renting—they’re buying. Wail Abualhamail, a real estate director, says there’s a growing trend of retirees investing in areas like Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, and JVC. These communities offer luxury, safety, convenience, and most importantly—a sense of belonging.

Many retirees are drawn to:

  • Access to parks, healthcare, shopping, and dining
  • Smart homes and eco-friendly designs
  • Flexible payment plans on off-plan properties
  • Passive income opportunities through rental investments

Affordable, up-and-coming areas like Al Furjan and Dubai South are also gaining popularity—especially for those looking to get more value for their money.

And according to real estate agent Shabna Ibrahim, retirees love community living. “They want to walk, socialize, and have everything nearby,” she shared.

The Healthcare Hurdle

But it’s not all smooth sailing. One of the biggest concerns for retirees is access to quality healthcare. Dr. Rahul Unnikrishnan, a geriatric medicine specialist, pointed out that some elderly residents live in areas where advanced medical services aren’t easily accessible.

And then there’s the health insurance issue—many plans are expensive and still only cover the basics. Dr. Rahul suggests a potential solution: a government-issued health card for long-term residents that provides affordable access to public hospitals, ideally priced around AED 10,000–15,000 per year. That would be a game-changer for many.

A Future for Retirees in the UAE?

The good news? The UAE is evolving. With more people retiring here every year, there’s a real opportunity for the country to become a leader in creating age-friendly cities—places where retirees feel safe, valued, and truly at home.

Whether it’s the sunny weather, vibrant communities, or family connections, it’s clear that the UAE is becoming more than just a work destination—it’s becoming a place to live well in every chapter of life.
